Is your feline friend a bit timid? Does Fluffy run and hide when you make a loud noise, or hightail it for her favorite hiding spot when she hears the doorbell? Just like people, cats all have their own unique personalities. Some are loud and outspoken, some are nonchalant, and some are quite shy. A Mesa, AZ vet offers some tips on caring for a scaredy-cat below.
First and foremost, have your vet give Fluffy a thorough examination. You want to make sure that your furball isn’t acting skittish because of medical issues.
Cats often feel safer in small, enclosed spaces. (This may be why Fluffy enjoys boxes, though it doesn’t explain why she will hop into the mere outline of a box laid out in tape.) Make sure your furry pal has plenty of hiding places to run to if she feels frightened. If you have a dog, you may also want to offer your kitty some vertical spaces, like cat towers, so she can get away from Fido.
Don’t Corner The Kitty
Never force attention on a timid kitty. This will just frighten Fluffy, and make her feel trapped. Always let her come to you. Try sitting on the floor, and holding out a small treat for her. Call her name, and see if she comes.
Playing is very important for shy cats, as it is a great way for them to burn off their excess energy. Fluffy will naturally be a bit tired—and therefore, calmer—after a fun play session. Use a toy that you control to make this more fun and challenging for her. Also, be sure to let your kitty win sometimes.
Talk It Out
Talking to a nervous cat can really help her feel safe and secure. Use a gentle, soothing tone, and just tell Fluffy that she is loved and cared for. Even if she doesn’t talk back, she’ll know that you’re trying to soothe her and communicate with her.
Get into the habit of leaving a TV or radio on for Fluffy. The sound of voices and music can help calm her. Just play something soothing: your kitty probably won’t find the latest Five Finger Death Punch very relaxing.
